Calcutta, West Bengal, India

Calcutta has the highest number of people below the poverty line of any of the major metropolitan cities in India, the poverty line being all those individuals who earn less than 30 rupees per day (around 0.8 US dollars).

Approximately 70% of these people live on 1000 rupees per month (around 25 US dollars). It is thus hardly surprising that more than two million people are reported to be living on the streets here.

Around 200,000 of these are children, 72% of whom are reported to suffer from chronic diseases such as tuberculosis, skin diseases and diarrhoea.
